Description of Class

Learn the ancient art of Japanese braiding. This class is part 2 and allows you to build on what you learned in the first class and advance your knowledge in jewelry making. Each class is $30.00, Braiding a Raised Spiral for Jewelry Making This class is for people who want to advance beyond the basic Kongo Gumi Kumihimo 8-strand Z-twist spiral braid by creating a 12-strand raised spiral Kongo Gumi braid. Several methods for completing the braid will be shown and discussed. Uncompleted braids can be finished at home. -or students can make arrangements with the instructor to meet for assistance in adding their findings to their braid. The student will learn: How to braid S-twist and Z-twist 12- strand raised spiral braids How to change from Z-twist to S-twist and S-twist to Z-twist spiral braids Techniques Taught How to braid a 12-strand Kongo Gumi S- or Z-twist spiral unbeaded braid. Skills Required The student should be comfortable braiding an 8-strand Kongo Gumi braid and adding end caps and clasps to a braid. What You Will Take Home At least a partially completed 12-strand Kongo Gumi braid and end caps and clasp to attach to the braid to complete the braid OR A completed 12-strand Kongo Gumi braid with end caps and clasp attached Kongo Gumi 12-strand design instruction sheet S- and Z-spiral braiding information sheet Kumihimo Disk Braiding Record Sheet — Long Kumihimo Resources List Project Tools the Student Will Need to Bring 32-slot Kumihimo disk 4 strands 72-inches long in EACH of three colors (total of 12 strands — 4 strands 72- inches long in each of TWO colors and 4 strands 90-inches long in the third color for the spiral) OR 8 strands of braiding material in one color and 4 strands 90 inches long in a second color for the spiral (total of 12 strands) 12 braiding spools/tamas Small counterweight NOTE: Students may buy braiding materials from Sunshine Weaving. NOTE: Students may bring their own end caps and clasps NOTE: Contact the instructor for help in buying the Kumihimo disk, counterweight, and braiding materials.
