There are 4 sessions - April 21, April 28, May 5, and May 12. This beginners class will get you started on your journey by teaching you how to: • Assess yarns and other “strings” for usability in a weaving project • Calculate any type and size of yarn to approximate yardage for use in weaving • Calculate amount of yarn needed to weave a desired item • Read and create a basic weaving draft • Call loom parts by name and learn basic weaving terms • Tie up the loom treadles for the pattern you will be using • Create a warp using a warping board • Thread (called “sley”) the reed using a hook • Thread the heddles using a hook • Tie on back and front beams and tension warp yarns for weaving • Place header, hemstitch edge using a large-eye tapestry needle • Weave plain weave and twill, and use a floating selvedge • Work a section with Brooks Bouquet lace pattern • Make a weaver’s knot to repair a broken warp yarn • Make use of many tips and tricks • Finish fabric Things you will need to bring: • Embroidery or other small scissors • Pencil and note paper • Hand-held calculator (or phone calculator) • Large-eye metal tapestry needle for hemstitching (eye should be large enough to accommodate the size of the yarn you will weaving with) • Ruler, 6" or 12", wood or plastic • Reed/heddle hook, if you have one The yarn we are using is a wool sport weight in two contrasting colors. You will need 250 yds of one color and 150 yds of the other. We can also order your yarn, just let us know when you sign up. We'll be in touch to find out what colors you would like.
